Banknotes world

  • The Monetary Authority of Singapore is issuing new $5 polymer notes from 18 May 2007. This is the third denomination in the Portrait Series to be converted from paper into polymer. The $5 polymer notes will circulate alongside the $5 paper notes, both of which will remain legal tender. read more..
  • The State Bank of Vietnam has announced that two denominations of paper notes with a face value of 50,000 VND and 100,000 VND which were made of cotton, would no longer be considered legal tender as of 1st September.  read more..

  • Bank of Ghana has introduced new currency denominations, as a major step in the country's economic reforms. The new currency is redonominated by setting the 10,000 Cedis to one Ghana Cedi which will be equivalent to one hundred Ghana Pesewas. The redenomination exercise is expected to last for six months during which the old and new currency is expected to be used side by side as legal tenders. read more..

 

  • The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced the launch of an extensive campaign to promote public awareness of the security features and the handling characteristics of the Hong Kong ten-dollar polymer note, which will be circulated within the next few weeks.

  • Macedonia’s government has announced that the national ePassport system will kick off later this month when 30 registration offices hosting 45 ePassport data capturing and entry stations open their doors for business throughout the country.

  • Bulgaria will start to issue on November 1st, technologically advanced "e-passports", armed with microchips that house personal and biometric data. These will include a digital photo and fingerprint.This is envisaged by legislative amendments that the government adopted on ThursdayThe applications for issuing new passports will be distributed free of charge as of October 31.Bulgarians will not be asked to put their best faces forward but will have a picture shot at the stands where applications are submitted.
  • Russia’s Information Technologies and Communications Minister Leonid Reyman has announced that “The system for issuing passports with biometrical data will be finally developed by 2009. It is the year when the project will reach its full capacity,”. According to him, the project has stirred much interest in all CIS countries read more..
     

  • As of August 15, 2007, Canadians who qualify will be able to renew their passport through the simplified renewal program and as of October 1, 2007, Passport Canada will introduce a new guarantor policy, which will allow most Canadian adult passport holders to act as guarantors for first time applicants. read more...

  • Ukraine new 200 Hryvnias banknote  

The National Bank of Ukraine has been issuing into circulation a new 200 Hryvnia banknote from 28.05.2007. We bring you initial description and pictures of the banknote. For more information, please check Ukraine section of The Catalogue of Currencies, or access our online version here.

  • Pakistan new series

We enriched our catalogue with complete descriptions of all new Pakistan banknotes including also new 1000 rupees banknote issued in 2007.
