Czech National Bank decides 20 CZK banknote will no longer be legal tender

At its meeting on 31 January 2008, the CNB Bank Board decided that the 20 CZK banknote will cease to be legal tender on 31 August 2008. The main reason for this decision is that the 20 CZK note no longer fulfils the function of currency in circulation. Notes will be exchangeable between 1 September 2008 and 31 August 2009 at the Czech National Bank and at all banks performing cash operations. Between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2014, the banknotes will only be exchangeable at the Czech National Bank. Exchange will be possible either in cash or by the crediting of an account maintained by the relevant bank. ...read more



Bermuda Monetary Authority to issue new-look banknotes

Newly-designed Bermuda dollar bank notes are set to hit the streets early next year and will represent the first complete redesign of the currency since it was launched in 1970. The new banknotes will be the same size as the current ones, with a flora and fauna design, according to the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA), which will be introducing them on February 20, 2009 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Authority and the 400th anniversary of the settlement of Bermuda. The new currency series was part of a number of measures announced by the BMA in its 2008 Business Plan, the first of its kind at the Authority, at a press conference held at its headquarters in Victoria Street. ...read more



Bank of Ireland to feature Old Bushmills Distillery on new Northern Ireland note issue

The new-look bank notes will come into circulation in April, coinciding with the 400th anniversary of Bushmills being granted a licence to distill whisky in 1608. The reverse of the new series of £5, £10 and £20 notes will feature an image of the iconic distillery, which is the main employer in north coast village of Bushmills and a tourist attraction in its own right, hosting over 120,000 visitors last year.  ...read more





Korean fingerprinting plan delayed to 2010

According to local news sources, South Koreans are unlikely to be fingerprinted when applying for their ePassports, which will be introduced in the second half of this year. The government has reportedly make moves to revise passport law, allowing, temporarily, the introduction of a non-fingerprint ePassports for two years before introducing fingerprint-based ePassports from 2010. ...read more



'Two-year delay' blow for United Kingdom ID card proposals

Gordon Brown's plans for identity cards were dealt a blow after leaked documents revealed the government plans to delay a national roll out of the scheme for at least two years. Despite repeated assurances that the controversial scheme is on track, Home Office documents show that the cards will only be issued to UK citizens from 2012 – two years later than stated. The cards were due to be issued to people renewing their passports from 2010 under plans set out two years ago. They will not be compulsory for British citizens until 2015. ...read more



New rules imposed on US travellers to Caribbean

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says oral declaration is no longer accepted for American travellers to the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada. In a statement issued here last Thursday, DHS said travellers would now be asked to present authorised documents when entering the United States at land or sea ports. "Travellers who do not present one of the documents listed may be delayed as US Customs and Border Protection officers attempt to verify their identity and citizenship," the statement warned. These documents include a US passport, traveller cards, state or provincial driver's licence, and US military identification with military travel orders. ...read more



L-1 Identity Solutions wins Panama's national and voter ID project

The Tribunal Electoral de Panama is to upgrade the country’s multi-purpose National ID system which also serves as Panama’s voter registration system. Under the terms of the $3.7 million contract, L-1 Identity Solutions, the prime contractor of the project, will deliver a complete multi-biometric solution that includes new enrolment devices, an upgrade of the biometric national registry, and integration services. The solution includes DFR 2100 Single Fingerprint Readers for fingerprint capture, ABIS System Search Engine for face and fingerprint image searches and BioTouch 500 and BioLogon Software for administrator authentication. ...read more
