Higher denominations in Iran soon.
The Central Bank of Iran plans to issue 200,000 rial and 500,000 rial banknotes, as 100,000 rial banknotes is the highest denominations currency in the country and the society is in need of higher denominations. The bank will begin printing 200,000 rial banknotes as soon as it receives permission from the Economy Ministry and the bank is also seeking approval for 500,000 rial notes and plans to introduce these within two years.

Nigerian citizens rejecting the polymer banknotes
After the big success in 2007 when the Central Bank of Nigeria announced the introduction of polymer versions of 5, 10, 20 and 50 naira notes, six years after the citizens are rejecting the polymer currency banknotes, either because it is faded to the point it can no longer be spent, or it shrinks after a while. People think that the government should just phase the polymer notes out and return to the old paper notes as the paper notes only gets dirty or torn and one can still piece it together with an adhesive tape.

India considering 10-rupee polymer note
The government in India will introduce 100 crore pieces of Rs 10 bank notes made of plastic on a field trial basis in five cities, minister of state for finance said on Tuesday. The minister said that the field trail will be conducted in five cities - Kochi, Mysore, Jaipur, Bhubhaneswar and Shimla with varied geographical locations and climactic conditions. The Reserve Bank of India has informed that while the primary objective of introduction of polymer notes is to increase its life, it could also help in combating counterfeiting.

New image on the 1000-krona bank-note
According to a Sveriges Riksbank press release dated 25 March 2013, "The Riksbank has reached agreement with the copyright holders for the images and symbols that will be used on the new banknotes. In connection with this, the portrait of Dag Hammarskjold on the 1000-krona banknote has been re-placed. The issue of the new banknotes will begin in early October 2015".

Thailand - new 20-baht note
King Rama IX in the Royal House of Chakri gown on the front, and on the back are images of the royal statue of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great seated on the Manangkhasila Asana Throne, the invention of the Thai script, the Ramkhamhaeng stele, ancient Thai script Lai Sue Thai, the grievance hearing, the Bell of King Ramkhamhaeng, and Sangkhalok Wares. The new notes have high-technology anti-counterfeiting measures. They also have Braille so the blind can identify value. The banknotes are made of better paper quality to provide the longer life cycle.

Kazakhstan - new 2,000-tenge note
On the 29 March 2013 the Kazakhstan National Bank has issued a 2,000-tenge banknote with a new design. The prevailing colors of the front side include dark and light green and most of the images are vertical. The prevailing colors of the reverse side are also dark and light green, while the images are horizontal.

Hawaii State Identification Card
From 2 January 2013, the state Department of Transportation (DOT) and all county driver license offices will implement Act 310, Session laws of Hawaii 2012, which affects the issuance of Hawaii State Identification Cards statewide. Anyone applying for an original or renewal of their Hawaii State Identification Card must present documentary proof of legal name, date of birth, social security number, legal presence and proof of principal residence address in person.

An interesting article where you can read an opinion on whether a national identity card would solve the problems with broken outdated identity systems. Or would be the process of implementing an American national identity card an expensive logistical and bureaucratic nightmare. One opinion states, that instead of spending the money to create new government departments to manage, protect, and update the records of over 300 million people, would be far better served by modernizing, cleaning, and standardizing the systems and databases that are already in use.

Mexican Government cooperation with Oberthur Technologies
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Relations has inked a deal with Oberthur Technologies to supply its high-tech security and identity solutions for a new Mexican passport. Oberthur Technologies operates several service centers throughout the region, including one in Mexico from where over 17 million personalized secure cards were issued in 2012.

UAE's Emirates ID card gets new name
From February, the name of the UAE`s Emirates identity card for expat and Emiratis have changed as the Gulf state`s Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) said. The name of the UAE`s ID card has been changed to Resident Identity card, due to distinguish between foreigners and UAE citizens.

Trüb AG deploys national e-ID solution in the Republic of Azerbaijan
Republic of Azerbaijan have selected the Trüb AG, a global supplier of high security identity and travel documents, to provide the key elements for an extensive national e-solution. The contract includes the supply of electronic identity cards (e-ID) equipped with a dual interface chip module as well as the installation of the personalization and quality assurance equipment for several personalization centers across the country.

Ministries argue over duplication of efforts in India's ID-card plan
India`s Home Ministry has proposed issuing smart biometric resident ID cards through its National Population Register, a move which some say is duplicating the efforts of the UIDAI program. As reported by The Economic Times, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is putting together a group of ministers to explore whether or not these programs duplicate efforts.
