State Bank of Pakistan launched new-look Rs 20 Banknote

The State Bank of Pakistan announced that all offices of SBP Banking Services Corporation are issuing new colour Rs 20 banknote with effect from 22nd March, 2008. The launching of new orange-green-yellow colour Rs 20 banknote is a part of State Bank's continuous efforts to improve the security, durability and aesthetic quality of banknotes as well as to address the public grievances. In the new-look Rs 20 banknote, the portrait of Quaid-e-Azam at the obverse of the note is printed in dark orange colour, while the geometrical design close to the portrait at right and left side as well as some portion of lettering in Urdu are printed in green colour, the other portion is in yellow-orange colour. At the reverse of the banknote, vignette of Mohen-jo-Daro and other ornamental designs depict the orange colour except at the close upper side of the vignette which is in green colour. The security features of new colour banknote are similar to that of Rs 20 brown colour banknote presently in circulation. The new colour banknote would facilitate the public to identify and distinguish the colour combinations of new designed banknotes of Rs 10, Rs 100, Rs 500, Rs 1000 and Rs 5000 introduced earlier. New Bahrain banknotes in circulation

The Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) announced that new Bahrain banknotes in all denominations are being issued from 17 March 2008. No change is being made to the coins in circulation. However, the existing banknotes will remain a legal tender until further notice from the CBB. The new banknotes and the existing banknotes will co-circulate for a period of time, to allow for all existing banknotes to be returned to the CBB in the normal course of business. The new family of Bahrain banknotes feature brand new designs as well as new and improved security features. All five denominations of banknotes are of uniform size (measuring 154mm x 74mm), which is slightly larger than the existing banknotes. "The change to the new currency was necessitated by the enactment of the Central Bank of Bahrain and Financial Institutions Law (CBB Law) in September 2006," said Dr Abdul Rahman Saif, Executive Director, Banking Operations, at the CBB. "The new currency reflects this significant change and each denomination of new banknotes bears the name of the Central Bank of Bahrain." He stressed that the existing currency will remain a legal tender for a period of time and until further otice from the CBB. ...read more



Bank of Lithuania has issued 10 litas and 100 litas banknotes into circulation

On 5th March, 2008, the Bank of Lithuania has started issuing new 10 litas and 100 litas banknotes of 2007 issue, which contain an additional security feature. "The new 10 litas banknotes were printed in Germany, while 100 litas banknotes were printed in France. These banknotes contain additional anti-colour-copiers security features. Banknote restocking is done every few years as litas banknotes wear out over time; sometimes they are even torn or otherwise damaged; so we keep replacing such banknotes with the new ones," Reinoldijus Sarkinas, the governor of the Bank of Lithuania said. He underlined that 10 litas banknotes of 1997 and 2001 issue and 100 litas banknotes of 2000 issue which are in circulation yet shall continue to be accepted as legal tender. ...read more

New 20 pataca banknotes to be issued for Beijing Olympic Games

Four million bank notes with a face value of 20 patacas will be issued by the Bank of China's (BOC) Macau Branch in commemoration of the 29th Olympic Games that will be held in Beijing this August. The bank notes, which will be in the same colour (purple) as the other 20 pataca notes currently circulating in the market, will be available at all local BOC branches the day after the administrative regulation is published in the Official Gazette, whose date has yet to be confirmed. The news was announced by a spokesman of the Executive Council, Tong Chi Kin, during the press conference at the government headquarters yesterday. According to Mr. Tong, one side of the note will be a printed picture of the Bank of China Building, the architecture representing the location of the torch relay of the ancient Olympic Games, as well as the emblem of the Beijing Olympic Games and a vertical line that reads "In Commemoration of the 29th Olympic Games" in both Chinese and Portuguese. The other side of the note will show a picture of the Beijing Olympic Stadium (also known as the "Bird's Nest"), Macau's Golden Lotus symbol, and the same bi-lingual print as on the right hand side.





US, EU security chiefs meet in Slovenia over visa waivers, travel security

European Union and U.S. security chiefs had agreed to pursue negotiations on a disputed U.S. visa waiver program that would allow Washington to keep talking to countries individually on some issues while dealing with Brussels on others. The U.S. wants air marshals on flights and electronic travel authorization as part of a new visa waiver law that could also require EU nations to provide more data on passengers on trans-Atlantic flights - demands that have irked EU officials. Washington also has been making bilateral deals with some EU nations - over the objections of EU officials who want to negotiate a visa waiver deal for the entire 27-nation bloc - which has caused tensions across the Atlantic and within Europe. ...read more



L-1 Identity Solutions Awarded by the U.S. Passport Card Program

L-1 Identity Solutions, Inc. (NYSE: ID), a leading provider of identity solutions and services, announced it has been awarded the prime contract by the Department of State for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) border crossing credential, the new passport card. The contract has an estimated value of approximately $107 million over five years. The Department of State is issuing the passport card in response to the needs of border resident communities for a less expensive and more portable alternative to the traditional passport book. The passport card will provide faster border crossing times and will ease traffic congestion at land border crossings over which $1.8 billion worth of trade flows into the U.S. each day. ...read more



Germany and U.S. to exchange data to fight terrorism

Germany and the United States pledged to allow each other access to DNA and fingerprint databases to try to strengthen the exchange of information on suspected terrorists. The agreement, initialed by German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble and U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff, allows Washington and Berlin to exchange personal data on suspects believed to be planning or to have committed terrorist acts. ...read more

The Egyptian government has started the official roll-out of its new national passport document together with SAFE ID Solutions, a leading provider of high secure ID solutions.
