  • Bank of Israel announced that  it soon may replace the current low-quality bills with polymer, or plastic, banknotes. "The Currency Department will be issuing the next issue of NIS 20 notes based on polypropylene, a polymer which is becoming more popular in many countries due to its durability," the central bank said in the annual report of its currency department.        read more..

 

  • Efforts in Nepal to phase out images of unpopular King Gyanendra from coins and banknotes have hit a snag with the release of new bills which still feature the monarch in the watermark. Banking officials in the impoverished Himalayan country, which is on the road to becoming a republic, admitted that keeping down costs meant their increasingly republican sentiment could only go so far. read more..

  • The German Bundestag has passed an amendment to the national Passport Act. From November 2007 the German ePassports will include electronic fingerprint images as a second biometric feature. To guarantee the security of this sensitive biometric information the data will be secured by Extended Access Control (EAC). read more..                                                         
  • The European Commission has requested that all member nations include additional digital biometric information and in particular fingerprint biometric data on ePassports by mid 2009. This second generation of electronic passports is a major step in biometrics. It creates a very strong link between the document and its owner as fingerprints offer a sure and proven means of personal identification. read more..

Our Catalogue of Currencies was enriched by new additions this month :

  • New 5 USD banknote  

On 20th September 2007 U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing has introduced new colorful $5 with portrait of 16th U.S. president Abraham Lincoln and will go into circulation early in 2008.   • Hong Kong new 10 HKD banknote

We enriched our catalogue with complete descriptions of 10 HKD banknote issued into circulation in July 2007.
