Somalia to issue new banknotes

Somalia's embattled central bank plans to revamp the anarchic country's currency because of a flood of fake notes printed by warlords and businessmen. Addressing donors meeting in neighbouring Kenya in March, the bank's director general, Sharif Mohamed Hassan, said "greedy" individuals had pumped counterfeit cash into the market for years, driving the local unit to its lowest ever level. In 1990, Hassan said, the Somali shilling was worth around 930 to the dollar. But by 2001 it had fallen to 14,000, and now it has slumped to around 25,000 shillings per greenback. "The present situation of counterfeit money is catastrophic," he said. "It's a priority to provide the market with a stock of new bank notes with good security features." ...read more

E-Passport Hacker Designs RFID Security Tool

The team that produced the RFDump research/hacker tool for cloning and altering data stored on radio-frequency ID tags has now come out with a product to thwart RFID hackers. German security researcher Lukas Grunwald, who made headlines two years ago for uncovering security vulnerabilities in new electronic passports being adopted by the U.S. and other countries, created RFDump with colleague Boris Wolf in 2004. Now the two have created RF-Wall (shown on the lower shelf in the picture at right) to help thwart RFID fraud and attacks against e-passports, electronic access cards and payment cards -- such as the Mifare Classic card that is used in the London Underground and which security researchers recently cracked. ...read more

UK national ID database tested with FBI criminal data

The Home Office is testing its identity scheme database with criminal data supplied by the FBI. The Identity and Passport Service said in a written statement that the FBI had agreed supply data from the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS), its biometric criminal database. "IPS has a Memorandum of Cooperation with the FBI which enables the FBI to provide IPS anonymised fingerprint data for the purposes of testing our biometric systems," said the statement. The IPS did not say how many records or precisely what fields of the FBI database would be used to test the ID system. But it did say that the test data would be "available in the millions", and that it would include 10-print fingerprint records. "We need to ensure that all biometric systems used in the National Identity Scheme are fit for purpose," said the IPS. "This requires us to ensure that any biometric system is tested thoroughly before, during and after deployment. One of the most important things to test is the ability to correctly identify fingerprints," it said. ...read more
