Iran to cut zeroes, issuing two new notes

Iran's central bank has begun issuing its own high-denomination paper notes to replace the promissory notes issued by private banks which will now be banned, state media said. Central bank governor Tahmasb Mazaheri said the move was intended to reassert control over the money supply as the bank considers broader currency reform amid double-digit inflation. A 500,000-rial (35-euro) note was issued on 23th and a one-million rial note on 27th August. Two-million note is to follow in October, Mazaheri told the official IRNA news agency. State television carried a central bank statement reassuring the public that the new paper notes should be regarded as legal tender just like ordinary banknotes. ...read more




Turkey to rename currency from YTL to Turkish Liras

In 2003, Turkish parliament passed a law that allowed removal of six zeroes from the currency, and circulation of the new lira. It was introduced on January 1st, 2005 replacing the previous lira. Turkish Central Bank will put into circulation country's new currency the "Turkish Lira" (TL) replacing the "New Turkish Lira" (YTL) as of the beginning of 2009, bank's governor Durmus Yilmaz said on Wednesday. "Our banknotes and coins will be renamed as TL and Kurus and they will enter into circulation on January 1st, 2009 with new designs, sizes and enhanced security features," Yilmaz told a press conference.

Samoa has issued new banknotes into circulation

New tala currency notes are ready for public circulation in Samoa, after the official launching in the end of  July by Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, reports Samoa live. Representatives from the government and business communities were at Robert Louis Stevenson Museum to witness the unveiling for the first time of the five new legal notes. The new 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 currency notes, all feature new artworks different from the ones currently in use. The artistry highlights some of Samoa's key developments in tourism and sports as well as photos of other standout landmarks like the government and also the Central Bank buildings in the center of Apia. Turkmenistan to denominate national currency in January 2009

Turkmenistan will circulate the denominated national currency on January 1, 2009. 1000 manat will equal 1 manat after the denomination. Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a decree to this effect at a government meeting on April 14.
While signing the decree on the national currency denomination, the president said the state budget for 2009 would be adopted at new prices calculated on the basis of an appreciated manat owing to the unification of the currency exchange rate. ...read more






Stolen UK passports

Details have emerged as to the number of UK blank passports and visa vignettes stolen in a recent raid on an unmarked van as it stopped at a newsagent to purchase a newspaper. The stolen passports were on their way from 3M Security Printing & Systems in Chadderton, Greater Manchester, to RAF Northolt, where they were to be distributed to embassies around the world. According to SDW sources 3650 blank ePassport booklets were stolen along with just over 8000 blank visa vignettes. This is more than was being reported at the time of the incident which took place on the 28 July this year.The value of the haul has been put at greater than ?2.5 million, although the electronic chips in the passports were not yet activated, according to the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), making it unlikely that they can made operational. ...read more



UAE launches ePassport tender

The United Arab Emirates has launched a tender process for its new ePassport. The country is planning to migrate its current machine readable passport towards an electronic passport following International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The new ePassport will be equipped with a contactless chip, which will store personal and biometric data. The initial RFP is aimed at pre-qualifying bidders. South Korea makes move to ePassports

From the last week of August, all newly issued passports in South Korea will be ICAO-compliant ePassports. Applicants for passports in the country will have to make a personal visit to any of 169 local authorities nationwide with their identification card and a photo.  The ePassport will be personalised on the Toppan E2000 passport printer distributed worldwide by GET Group. The ePassports  are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and contain their electronic chip in the back cover. Korean embassies and consulates overseas will reportedly begin issuing the ePassports some time in October and November.The country had intended to include fingerprints in the passports, but that plan was shelved until a later date.
