China issued special 10-yuan notes to mark Olympics

The People's Bank of China (PBOC), the country's central bank, started to issuing a commemorative banknote with a face value of 10 yuan ($1.46) from 8th July 2008 to mark the Beijing Olympic Games. The PBOC said it would issue a total of 6 million such notes, which would be circulated in the currency market with the same denomination as the ordinary 10-yuan notes. The new note, in cyan, is 148.5 millimeters long and 72 millimeters wide, according to the central bank. While the ordinary 10-yuan notes are in cobalt black, 140 millimeters long and 70 millimeters wide. ...read more



BOCHK Launches the Olympic Games 20 Hong Kong Dollar Commemorative Banknote

On 11th July, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited (“BOCHK”) announced the launch of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Hong Kong Dollar Commemorative Banknote (“HKD Olympic Banknote”) denominated in HKD20. There is a total of 4 million pieces of the HKD Olympic Banknote to be available for public sale from July 16 to 31 at the 50 designated branches of BOCHK. Proceeds generated from the sale of the HKD Olympic Banknote will be donated for charity cause. Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Commemorative Banknote is the first Olympic-themed banknote in the history of the Olympic Games. New 5000 Tenge banknote has been issued into circulation

The National Bank of Kazakhstan issued a 5000 Tenge note to dedicate 15-years of National currency. Banknote has almost same design as previous issue, except some improvements of security features. New currency notes of Rs5 and Rs50 launched
State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on 7th July launched state-of-the-art new currency notes of Rs 5 and new design of Rs 50 denomination with added security features.
Announcing the issue at the launching ceremony at SBP head office, the Governor State Bank Dr Shamshad Akhtar said that the new notes will be available from Tuesday (8th July) from all branches of SBP Banking Services Corporation (SBSC). She said the up-to-date security features incorporated in Rs 50 newly designed and new Rs 5 banknotes are of international standards and thus minimized the possibility of their counterfeiting. ...read more





German Cabinet Approves Disputed ID Cards, Citizenship Test

On 19th July, the German cabinet gave the go-ahead for a new controversial citizenship test for immigrants and new identification cards to German citizens amid continuing fears the latter could erode privacy rights. The new ID card is the result of a compromise between conservative Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaueble, who was pushing for compulsory digital fingerprints that he said would boost security, and data-privacy proponents who argued it would erode privacy rights. ...read more


Self-authenticating passport for Belgium

Graphic Security Systems Corporation (GSSC) and F. C. Oberthur (FCO) have teamed to produce the world's first self-authenticating passport. It was introduced in the new Belgian passport released on February 1, 2008. FCO, the French security printer which produces the Belgian passport, has added an optical decoder page in the passport opposite the data page. When placed over the photo, the decoder page verifies the presence of GSSC's Scrambled Indicia feature hidden in the holder's photo. The Scrambled Indicia feature reveals any fraudulent changes to the photo or information printed on the data page. ...read more

Kazakhstan to implement biometric passports

Kazakhstan is ready to implement biometric passports, said on 17th July chairman of the committee of registration service and rendering of the legal assistance of the Ministry of justice of Kazakhstan Samat Abish, agency reports. In the beginning of July of this year first original samples of the Kazakhstani electronic biometric passports successfully underwent approbation, which proved its 100-per cent compatibility of the domestic samples with all international norms, requirement and technical characteristics. Turkmenistan introduces passports with biometric data

Turkmenistan has introduced new travel passports with biometric data of Turkmen citizens as of 10 July 2008. Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a relevant resolution yesterday "with the aim of further strengthening friendship relations with foreign countries and expanding mutually beneficial trade and economic, scientific, technological and cultural partnership with foreign countries, and also ensuring legitimate rights of Turkmen citizens for free travel abroad and back home," the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent in Ashgabat has learned from the press service of the Turkmen president. At the same time, the current passports of Turkmen citizens are valid for travel abroad and back home up to 10 July 2013.


UK cancels e-passport application upgrade program

The U.K. Identity and Passport Service has scaled back plans to upgrade its electronic passport system. Millions had been spent on the Electronic Passport Application (EPA2) project upgrade. The total write-down of EPA2 assets since the project began in 2005 is Ł10.8 million, comprising Ł5.5 million in 2006-07 and Ł5.3 million in 2007-08. The figures were revealed in the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) Annual Report and Accounts for 2008, which also disclosed that the IPS spent Ł84.8 million on outsourcing services last year. In the report the IPS explained the decision to drop EPA2 and revert to "more limited" enhancements to the existing ePassport system, saying it was striving for value for money. ...read more
